PIONEERING & BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Nobody in Esaka knew who we were. In a society built around groups and long commitments, the first question we were asked was not what do you believe, it was how long are you staying? So we stayed, and we made friends.

The emphasis was not yet on running a conventional Sunday church. It was essentially pioneering work: sowing seeds, building trust and establishing a presence in Osaka.

HOLDING THE GROUND
COVID changed everything.
Japan’s borders closed, which meant that the previous model of relying heavily on mission teams coming into Osaka was no longer possible. Our missionaries also went back and shifted our outreach efforts to Online!
Weekly online meet-ups replaced everything that needed a room, which eventually become a regular programme in future.

This was also the season in which the manpower on the ground became extremely thin. Poh Choo was the only person serving COOS OSAKA on the ground.
Poh Choo continued building relationships, maintaining contact with people and carrying the work even when there was no larger team around her. The fruit of those relationships would only become much more visible years later.

In February 2025, Ps Nicholas Tei was sent to COOS OSAKA, as Daniel and Poh Choo returned to Singapore.
This marked a significant transition for COOS OSAKA. For the first time, Poh Choo, who had been part of the mission from its earliest days, was no longer serving on the ground in Osaka.
She was dearly missed. The relationships she had patiently built over so many years meant that the next team had big shoes to fill.
Yet Poh Choo’s ministry did not simply end when she returned to Singapore. She prayed for the new team, continued encouraging them, and remained a great source of support from Singapore.

The running joke was: “Everything also CAN do!”
But beneath the joke was an important truth:
We CAN, not because we can do everything, but because GOD CAN.
As this new season began, God gave Ps Nicholas a direction for COOS OSAKA:
BUILD L.I.F.E. TOGETHER
L– LOVING ONE ANOTHER
Jesus said: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
COOS OSAKA
We want love to be something people can see and experience at COOS OSAKA.
Love in the way we interact with one another.
Love in the way we welcome someone new.
Love in remembering and celebrating birthdays.
Love in sharing meals.
Love in noticing when someone is absent.
Love in being present for one another through the ordinary moments of life.

Love is…
We do not only want people to hear us talk about the love of Christ.
We want them to experience a community shaped by His love.
I – INTENTIONAL & INTEGRATIONAL LIVING
“Activities do not disciple people. People disciple people.”
So instead of separating “ministry” from “life”, we are learning to integrate the two.
We invite people not only into our programmes, but also into our lives, meals, outings, conversations, celebrations, team bonding and ordinary moments together.
Because sometimes people need more than another sermon about following Jesus. They need to see what following Jesus looks like in someone’s life.
This also means learning a sustainable rhythm of mission.
Our missionaries are not here simply to rush from one activity to another. We want them to have enough space to rest, build friendships, enjoy life together and be present with people. fully recognising that these ordinary moments can become opportunities for ministry too.
We also increasingly welcome individuals, couples, families and small groups visiting Japan to spend time with us and serve alongside us.
You don’t always need to join an organised mission team to be part of the mission.
Even a vacation can become more meaningful when part of it is offered to God and shared with others.
F – FOCUS ON BRIDGING
Ultimately, only God can change a heart. Our responsibility is not to manufacture that change. Our role is to be a bridge. Our real work is to help people take their next step.

Not everyone we meet will be at the same place, and not everyone will take the same-sized step.
So our prayer is that through each meetup, each meal, each conversation, each activity, each Bible study and each Sunday Service, someone moves one step closer to Jesus.
We may not always be the ones who see the final result. But we can faithfully build the bridge.
E – EXPLORE NEW VENTURES
‘We would rather try and fail than fail to try.”
We continue exploring new ways to connect with and reach our Japanese friends.
Some ideas may become long-term ministries. Others may only happen once. And some simply may not work!
But that does not necessarily make them failures. Every attempt teaches us something.

We understand a little more about the culture.
We understand a little more about how people think.
We discover what creates opportunities for deeper conversations.
We learn what to change, what to keep and what to try differently next time.
The goal is therefore not to find one programme that works and keep repeating it forever.

The first COOS OSAKA Retreat marked another important step in our journey.

We were no longer simply gathering people through outreach programmes, but growing as a church community. Going away together, sharing life together and creating space to encounter God together.
More importantly, the retreat became a place where people took significant steps of faith, where we witnessed decisions for salvation and baptism.
